After nearly four months of negotiations, the Town of Osoyoos has announced major changes to its relationship with Destination Osoyoos (DO).
In a media release issued jointly by the Town and DO on Sept. 25, the Town said it will award a three-year contract to DO for the provision of tourism marketing and visitor services that will take effect Jan. 1, 2010, and last until 2012.
Under the new contract, which has not been finalized, DO will receive $120,000 per year from the Town and will no longer carry out economic development services for Osoyoos. [...more]
A 50-year-old Osoyoos man has been charged after allegedly trying to strike a former Osoyoos town councillor with a hatchet at Haynes Point Provincial Park on Sept. 22.
Police said Louis Joseph Lemay was arrested and charged with assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence after allegedly swinging a hatchet at a man. [...more]
To make up for a cash shortfall for 2009 of roughly $275,000, active members of the Osoyoos Golf and Country Club will have to pay an extra $410 in dues this year.
“On October 1, 2009, each Member who has paid regular playing dues for 2009, will be invoiced an additional $410.00 (plus GST),” reads a message sent to the club’s members on Sept. 18 from club President Fred Meester. [...more]
A road upgrade project in Osoyoos will be receiving more than $393,000 in federal and provincial government dollars.
On Sept. 24, Premier Gordon Campbell and Prince George–Peace River MP Jay Hill announced that $477 million dollars will be contributed to 174 infrastructure projects around the province valued at $719 million.
The federal government will be handing out $244 million while the province’s share will be $233 million. [...more]

The Yard and Market Fair on Saturday (September 26) showed our Club once again how very fortunate we are to live in Osoyoos.
The funds raised will be directed to the Stop Human Trafficking Initiative which is a Western Canada Soroptimist Program.

Ask some of the students in Ms. MacNaughton’s Grade 4/5 class at Osoyoos Elementary School about what they learned about Terry Fox on the afternoon of Sept. 16 and there’s no shortage of answers.
“He raised money for cancer research,” said one student.
“He ran a marathon every day,” said another.

Despite the concerns of visitors at a neighbouring property, the owner of a chunk of wetland in rural Osoyoos said he is following all the rules as he is clearing his land.

It was in a Grade 11 criminology class that Const. Kelly Baker of the Osoyoos-Oliver RCMP first knew she wanted to be a police officer and make a difference.
“It was really the only thing I ever imagined myself doing,” she said.
Baker, who has been with the local detachment for a year, is one of five female Mounties serving this community and one of 3,755 women serving with the RCMP across Canada. [...more]
