Black Hills complements wine tasting experience with food tasting in partnership with Joy Road

Black Hills Estate Winery has launched a new feature combining wine tasting with a fresh food experience.

The local vineyard and winery has teamed up with Joy Road to launch the Joy Road Vineyard Kitchen at the winery off Black Sage Road between Oliver and Osoyoos.

“What we’re trying to do with our Joy Road Vineyard Kitchen is create an opportunity to create unique culinary experiences with our wines,” said Glenn Fawcett, president of Black Hills. “We’ve been doing a sit-down wine experience the last couple of years, but we felt that so many people like to have a food experience to go along with it, to enhance the appreciation of the wine they’re tasting.”

The kitchen itself is built into a re-purposed shipping container that arrived just 48 hours before Friday’s media launch, Fawcett said.

Joy Road, co-owned by Dana Ewart, has been using local and seasonal ingredients to create dining experiences ever since it began by selling pastries at farmers’ markets.

After a ceremonial ribbon cutting, media and guests were served a lunch in which samples of the various Black Hills wines were paired with a succession of foods – oysters, a charcuterie board, vegetables, salads, salmon, asparagus and two varieties of pizzas.

How is what Black Hills is doing different from what the numerous other wineries in the area offer?

“Many wineries are doing a great job with food experiences as well,” said Fawcett. “The thing that we’re doing differently is because we don’t do a stand-up tasting bar, guests have a sit-down tasting program. Our experiences are more in depth, and with the addition of food it allows for a more expanded in-depth experience. Ours is less of a restaurant and more of a food and wine experience.”

Many visitors come from the Lower Mainland and Alberta and often they don’t yet have a sophisticated knowledge of wines, but they are travelling in vineyard country and they are very interested in learning, said Fawcett.

“The Okanagan is just so exciting because it’s not staid and traditional,” he said. “There are so many different ways that the wineries and restaurants are doing things to create an exciting adventure for first-time visitors.”
