The Osoyoos Coyotes are seeking a new head coach following the decision by owner Randy Bedard not to renew the contract of Ken Law.

Law has been the team’s only head coach in its eight-year history, but Bedard said, “It’s time to inject something new into the organization.”

Bedard said Law’s departure was amicable.

“There were no issues,” said Bedard. “He was very gracious when I sat down with him. I appreciate everything he’s done. It’s just sometimes you know when it’s time to make a change, you get that feeling where it’s time to freshen it up.”

Law, 61, described the decision as “a bit of a shock.”

“I was planning on coming back and was negotiating my contract,” Law told the Osoyoos Times. “Randy just said that he decided to change things up. These things happen.”

Law, who lives in Penticton, says he’ll miss the Osoyoos community and it’s support for the team.

“It’s been a fun ride,” he said. “It’s been a very, very good place to coach. Anybody that steps into that role will enjoy themselves. It’s a community that gets behind the team. I’ll definitely miss it.”

Bedard praises the work that Law did over the team’s history, bringing it six regular season titles, playoff runs most years and one championship in the Coyotes’ first season, 2010-11.”

He said he has no one in mind for the head coach position, but he’s putting the word out on social media and through the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

“I’m sure we’ll get a lot of interest from different people,” said Bedard. “I’m welcoming applications for the head coach position.”
