Dog park must not be taken away from Osoyoos seniors

By on September 19, 2017

Dear Editor:

It is all about balance.

Youth is always important and needs support and nurturing, but Osoyoos has a large senior community and we must look after them as well.

Many of the seniors in Osoyoos have pets that are extremely important to their quality of life. A large number of seniors love and enjoy their four-legged companions, but have mobility issues, which do not allow them the freedom of taking their pets for long walks. What can they do?

They can and do take advantage of the off-leash dog park built for them by their fair thinking and concerned town council.

This park is not something to be bargained with. This is an important part of our community. It is a godsend for many dog-loving seniors. It is a social gathering for many seniors and families.

This is, yes, a “Five Star” off-leash dog park. It is in place. It is well used. It is necessary.

It must not be taken away.

Remember, balance and quality of life for all.

As a dog owner – It’s a ball park. Zoned, designed and built as a ball park for the purpose of playing ball – currently being used as a dog park.
No jurisdiction in the world builds 5-star dog parks.

May I suggest it’s overreach to fight for this particular piece of land. How realistic is it to expect recreational infrastructure in a prime location in a growing town – as a dedicated permanent dog park?
It will always be a fight.

It may be a good time to leverage the need for a suitable dedicated dog park. Something more realistic and sustainable. Or we risk losing out entirely one day. Seen that before all too often.

Im sure the collective creative minds of our town can find a satisfactory solution for everyone.

The ball park was changed to a dog park because it wasn’t being used so what has changed? It must be the substantial growth of our population (no)? It must be are demographic change to familys from seniors (no)? Or the masive growth in minor league baseball (no)? Maybe it’s because the new owners of Boston Pizza want to have adult baseball tournaments so they will use thier resturant? There is already a ball dimond here one is enough! I’m positive that the dog park will get used much more as a dog park than a little use baseball dimond for a small, small segment of our population. We need another ball dimontd as much as we need a usless Airport! The dimond was changed to a dog park for a reason and that reason has not changed. And the picture of a few little kids in baseball uniforms doesn’t change that fact. This is purely another self interest ploy to manipulate our town council to use are tax dollars. Don’t fall for it there is an agenda attached!!!

I agree that the dog park is a well used resource for not only seniors, but dog owners of all ages.

We frequently take our dog there and chat with people who are visiting Osoyoos.

It is one of the best dog parks that we’ve ever taken our dog too, and we really appreciate it.

Please Council, make a balanced decision. Afterall,we are all tax payers.

    Clare and Ron
