1927 – 2012

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Tom Stevenson, born June 3, 1927 in Lac Vert, Saskatchewan. Tom passed away January 18, 2012 in the Grand Forks hospital surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his children, Barb (Joe), Norman (Cheryl), Tim, Jennifer (Brian Sr.) and Wilford (Pam). He was predeceased by his wife Joyce and his son John. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Nichole, Bradley, Sascha, Brian Jr., Jamie, Meghan, Brenda and Jeffrey who he was so proud of. He also has 9 great grandchildren: Kaitlin, Annie, Harley, Tayler, Brittany, Korlee, Jacob, Cole, Courtney and Jenna who he enjoyed so much. Tom was a shipwright with the FSMD in Vancouver until his retirement in 1988. He and Joyce enjoyed traveling in their 5^th wheel, making many friends along the way until they settled in Osoyoos in 1990. He enjoyed woodworking, turning bowls, building trays and many other things which were admired by all, to be passed on to the family for future generations to enjoy. He enjoyed all the camping and fishing trips with his family. He was a colourful person to all who knew him and will be greatly missed. The family will be having a celebration of life this summer to honour Dad’s life. Dad’s wishes were to be cremated and interred at Lac Vert, Saskatchewan to be with his father, Norm, brother, Clarence and his sister, Viola. We would like to take this opportunity to especially thank the staff of Boundary Hospital for their kindness, compassion and extraordinary level of generosity. A special thanks to Dr. Coleshill for his diligent medical attention to Dad.

MURIEL ‘PEGGY’ NOCIAR

It is with a combination of sadness and relief that we announce the passing of Muriel ‘Peggy’ Nociar on January 20, 2012, in the South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver, at the age of 84 years. Peggy will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Lynn (Alex) Sutton of Osoyoos, son, Jeffrey (Terry) Payliss, also of Osoyoos, 5 grandchildren; Ronald Follgard, Thomas Calvert, Todd Payliss, Amber Payliss and Brandon Payliss, and 2 great grandchildren; Savanna Payliss and Beaudry Payliss. Sadly, Peggy was predeceased by her beloved husband Rudy as well as her parents Peter and Philmena Furlon and her sister Mary Coulitti. Some of Peg’s greatest loves were flowers, gardening, golfing, playing pool and animals. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012, at Cactus Ridge Retirement Centre, 9107 Main Street, Osoyoos. EVARISTO SOARES DE MELO

Nov. 8, 1925 – Jan. 24, 2012

On Tuesday January 24, 2012, Evaristo Soares (Ed) De Melo of Osoyoos passed away peacefully at the McKinney Place Extended Care Unit at the age of 86 years. He was predeceased by his brother Manuel of Kitimat. Ed will be fondly remembered by his loving wife Natalia; his son Leandro (Natty) and grandchildren Tina and Jeff of Osoyoos, his son John and grandchildren Nancy, Curtis, Rebecca and Peter and their mother Karen all of Kelowna; his sisters Gilda and Maria from Toronto; his brother-in-law Jose Alves (Liberta) of Kitimat; many nieces, nephews and extended family in Canada, the USA and Portugal.

Ed and Natalia were married in March of 1951 in Sao Miguel, Azores and he came to Canada in 1956. The family settled in Osoyoos in 1967 and purchased the orchard. Ed worked many jobs over the years but his main occupations included with Alcan in Kitimat and he was self-employed operating an orchard in Osoyoos since 1967. He also served many years as a director of the Monashee Co-op as a delegate to the BC Fruit Growers Association (BCFGA). Ed was a long time member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church and was part of the team that tore down the old church before the construction of the new church at its current location. Prayers were recited at 7:00 P.M. Friday January 27, 2012 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church. A funeral mass was celebrated by Fr. Dave DeSouza at 10:00 A.M. Saturday January 28, 2012 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church followed by interment and committal at the Osoyoos Lakeview Cemetery. A reception hosted by the CWL in the church lower hall followed the interment. The family would like to thank the staff, the nurses and doctors at SOGH and McKinney Place.
