Writer Feels Tourists Are Being ‘Gouged’

Posted on 29 April 2009 by admin

Editor:

Am I missing something here?

Today I got a brochure in the mail saying that if I register my name (only one household per card) I can get big discounts on several items at several stores in Osoyoos.

Well, I’ve been a resident for over 40 years in Osoyoos and now I can get a break.

At the same time we have an organization that is hell-bent to get tourists to come to Osoyoos to spend their money at higher prices (since they are not local people with a special card).

They are being gouged.

I do not understand their way of thinking.

If I were a tourist, I would avoid coming here.

Osoyoos

This is going on in all kinds of tourist communities in Canada and I agree with it. Tourist communities have always been more expensive to live in and being here as a full time year around resident should have benefits. We do pay all the local taxes.

We are back in Vancouver after our week-long vacation was cut short (by 5 days!) propane cannons woke us up at 5:45 am two mornings in a row while staying on Lakeshore Drive. Enough is enough - we came back to the city to get some peace and quiet. Those things are loud! Heart attack loud! There has to be a better way to scare birds - especially close to tourist areas.
