WE CAN’T AFFORD NATIONAL PARK AT THIS TIME, SAYS LOCAL READER

Posted on 18 April 2012 by admin

Dear Editor:

I can’t believe our federal government is considering buying out cattle ranches in the South Okanagan to put them out of business for the sake of a national park.
These cattle ranches are contributing to the local and regional economy in a huge way and we all know there will be no cattle allowed in a national park.
A few years ago, my wife and I went through a national park on the David Thompson Highway and we paid a toll of $17.80 for the two of us and the car.
Will the government have a toll booth on the Richter Pass highway? Will we all be paying a toll to get in and out of Osoyoos?
The government does not have the millions of dollars necessary to create a national park.
It is time all levels of government start setting an example and stop spending money they do not have, especially for non-essentials like a national park. Please stop this insanity and forget about a national park.

We can’t afford to NOT develop this national park!! If we don’t this unique land will be lost forever! Please stop this insanity and get on with the national park!

The future for the South Okanagan should be very clear for all its residents and in the longer term for those in the Keremeos area. The valley bottom and ajacent hillsides will disappear under vineyards, subdivisions and golf courses just completing the changes that have already occurred. The need for water will mushroom and completely change the hydrology of the region. The biodiversity of the area will plummet and be replaced by H. insapiens and C. domesticus. Walmart will reign supreme boosting the standard of living but nosediving the quality of life. Small islands of what is left of the present ecosystem will be conserved in the hands of the First Nations and be the basis of their future prosperity.Ranchers will be a memory like the Fur Traders. With such an attractive prospect who needs a National Park for the future of all Canadians?
