FORTISBC DEFENDS UTILITY’S SMART METERS APPLICATION PROCESS

In your January 16 edition of your newspaper, you published a letter expressing concerns regarding “smart meters” including perceived health risks.
FortisBC has proposed the installation of advanced meters for its electric customers; however, with regard to human assessments of human safety, FortisBC relies upon the judgment of our public health institutions that regularly review relevant scientific literature. These institutions include the BC Ministry of Health and Health Canada.
In addition, FortisBC is going through a public and transparent regulatory process with the BC Utilities Commission regarding its proposed Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project. This process includes input from customers, including those who have health concerns. Ultimately, the Commission will weigh the evidence and decide whether or not FortisBC can proceed with this project.

Please do review the expert evidence submitted to the BC Utilties Commission by 8 independent experts on behalf of the Citizens for Safe Technology’s intervention. They provide many resports and studies concerning the health effects from prolonged exposure to RF radiation. They speak about the inadequacy of the guidelines Fortis is hiding behind — Safety Code 6. Fortis’s application was turned down by BCUC in 2008 when it wanted to implement the very same program. The Commission in its wisdom said the benefits do not justify the costs and that the technology is too new, and will be too expensive to update. Nothing has changed except the pressure from the govt. has increased. These meters have been proven to have no benefits except to the corporations, to be fire hazards, to increase monthly bills dramatically (even before time of use billing) and to radiate far more than ITRON, Hydro or Fortis admit. Pressure the BCUC to stand firm, as they did before and refuse the application.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt of the Sophia Health Institute states in a You Tube video that lab reports show everybody is electrosensitive. He says that wireless smart meters are 600 times above the U.S Environmental Protection Agency standards, sending signals up to 190,000 pulses a day, with serious health consequences including high blood pressure, heart palpitations, Alzheimer’s, brain tumours and neurological symptoms.
