Quinn Lockerby is only four years old, but already she’s a voracious reader.

The little girl, who is the daughter of Tara and Gene Lockerby, recently received a backpack and reward sticker from the Osoyoos library branch as the library’s newest, “100 Books to Read Before Kindergarten” award recipient.

Librarian Joanne Schaffrick said Quinn competed a list of 100 children’s books with reading help from her parents.

Schaffrick says the library has pamphlets that list 100 books in the library system with a checkbox beside each book. When a preschool child completes a book, they put a check mark beside it. And when they complete all 100, they bring it to the library for an award.

“They read with mom and dad of course when they’re preschool age,” said Schaffrick. “They’re all books that we have in the system here and we help them order them if they’re not in this branch because there are 29 different branches.”

The program, which aims to inspire a love of books for children, uses great picture books with great stories, said Schaffrick.

“They’re all ones great for that development age of course, but we have people who have been working on it that might be a little younger or older,” she said. “Quinn is perfect for it because she’s four right now and will be five soon and then starting school in the fall.”

The pamphlet with the reading list is given out at the library and elsewhere in the community, such as to children in the StrongStart program at Osoyoos Elementary School.

Schaffrick said about 10 children have received awards for completing the list in the past year, but it’s hard to know how many others are still working their way down the list.

She likes the program and said the library will continue to offer it.

“Quinn is well on her way to being prepared for kindergarten in the fall,” said Schaffrick.
