Two allegedly armed with shotguns during Osoyoos incident
On the evening of Sunday, May 14, RCMP officers responded to a report of a home invasion at #1 “ 8304 70th Avenue in Osoyoos.
Three men had entered the residence and forced the occupants to the ground, demanding money. Two of the men were armed with what appeared to be shotguns. The suspects fled the scene and police were called.
As a result of the police investigation, three men were apprehended by Kelowna RCMP officers about two hours later. With the assistance of Kelowna Serious Crime investigators, search warrants were obtained and a vehicle and residence in Kelowna were searched. Shotgun shells and a loaded shotgun were seized as evidence and a fourth suspect was also identified and arrested.
All four suspects, ages 22 to 24, appeared in Penticton Provincial Court Thursday to answer to the charges of break-and-enter and robbery with a firearm. The men are from Kelowna, but RCMP say they have ties to the Osoyoos area. A conviction for using a firearm in a robbery carries a minimum four-year jail sentence.
Police believe the incident is drug-related and was not a random act. Osoyoos Corporal Harold Hallett, who said he was unable to release any more information about the incident, added if the males are convicted, he anticipates they will receive a lengthy jail term.
It's a serious offence and I'm pleased to see the four men are in custody. He adds that, although a report of a home invasion is disturbing, ordinary citizens don't have to worry about home invasions.
The May 9 home invasion reported in last week's Osoyoos Times is still under investigation and is not believed to be linked to this latest incident.
