The Osoyoos Council Remuneration Committee, an organization of citizens created by the Town of Osoyoos months ago to review and make recommendations on remuneration for Osoyoos town councillors and the mayor, has disbanded without completing its mandate.
Osoyoos town council accepted a resignation letter from four of the committee's five members at its meeting on June 16.
In a May 22 letter to council, committee members Peter Steele, Bill Collins, June Harrington and Bill Robertson wrote we have become aware of a potential for conflict of interest of a member of the committee. While we have not obtained a legal opinion on this matter, we feel it is morally wrong and potentially damaging to our individual reputations in the community if we were to continue to serve in this capacity.
The committee's fifth and final member, Sy Murseli, told the Osoyoos Times that the other committee members are uncomfortable with his intentions to run for Osoyoos town council in the November municipal election.
Legal counsel for the Town of Osoyoos, however, determined there was no conflict of interest for the members of the committee.
