At a July 21 meeting of Osoyoos town council, councillors gave second and third readings to zoning amendments that would allow the construction of a 3.6-hectare industrial park at the Osoyoos Airport.
The park would be located on the strip of land between the airport's runway and Hwy. 3.
At a public hearing before the council meeting, six Osoyoos residents stood to voice their opposition to the proposed park, bringing up concerns that area measurements done by Town planning staff were not accurate and that there wouldn't be enough room on the site to accommodate industrial buildings along with a functioning runway, airplane taxiing and storage areas.
One resident commented there wouldn't be sufficient room to deal with any emergencies should they arise.
Town staff were called upon to have a study on the industrial park concept completed by an independent aviation consultant for council's review before the bylaw is given final reading.
