The movie Gunless, being filmed in the hills just west of Osoyoos, has become a source of work for local carpenters and labourers.
Thirteen workers from Osoyoos, Cawston, Hedley and Keremeos are building eight western-themed buildings for the movie set.
One of the film’s crewmembers indicated that while it may be acceptable to go over budget on a movie, it is not OK to run over schedule.
The make-believe town that will be used for the film is being built on schedule and the crew expects to meet a deadline of May 25 when cameras are supposed to begin rolling.
The crewmember also said this movie has proven to be a benefit for the local economy.
“I think it’s good because it’s local people who have done an awesome job,” he said. “They have really stepped up to the plate because we work some terrific long hours.
“And it’s great because this is a Canadian film, not one that is just shot here pretending to be about America, it’s all about being Canadian.”
The film has a projected budget of $10 million and stars Canadian actor Paul Gross, best known for the television series Due South and the films Men with Brooms and Passchendaele.
It is being directed by William Phillips and is scheduled to be released in March, 2010.
According to a plot outline on the Internet Movie Database, the film is about an American gunslinger who is “repeatedly thwarted in his attempts to mount a showdown in a friendly town in Canada where no one seems to understand or appreciate the brutal code of the American Wild West.”
