Some of the region’s most innovative businesses will be celebrated the evening of Friday, Jan. 18 when the South Okanagan Chamber of Commerce presents its Business Excellence Awards.
The awards ceremony starts at 8:30 p.m. and follows the chamber’s annual general meeting and a dinner. The events will be held at Walnut Beach Resort in Osoyoos. A total of 11 businesses were nominated by chamber members under three categories: Entrepreneur of the Year, Small Business (one to six employees), and Medium Business with seven or more employees.
“It’s actually our biggest year in a long time to have that many nominees,” says Holly Plante, first vice president of the chamber. “We had a lot more involvement this year, a lot more people wanting to recognize local businesses.”
Plante said she’s pleased and excited to see both nominees for Entrepreneur of the Year are young women – April Goldade, owner of Terrafina Restaurant and Kelsi Bissonnette, owner of Breathe Studio.
Businesses are nominated across the region by chamber members, who fill out forms giving the reasons for their nomination. The winners are then chosen by the chamber’s board, which reviews the nominations.
The board looks at a number of considerations including community involvement and the leadership role played by the business.
Plante says she’s seen people collaborating between communities.
“A lot of people don’t look at it as separate areas,” she says. “They look at it regionally and how we can support our region.”
Nominees in the Small Business category are: Kick Start Printing, Alberto’s Decorating Centre, Hidden Chapel Winery, Unveil Shuttles and Osoyoos Signs.
In the Medium Business category, nominees are: Hester Creek Estate Winery, Watermark Beach Resort, Stoneboat Vineyards and Walnut Beach Resort.
The evening gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with a wine reception, which is followed by the AGM at 6:30 p.m.
Plante emphasizes the meeting is open and non-members may attend at no charge. A new board will be selected as well.
The dinner, which gets underway, at 7 p.m., costs $40 per person or $350 for a table of 10. This is followed by the awards ceremony.
