Osoyoos Gift Cupboard celebrating its first anniversary this weekend

Dear Editor:

The Osoyoos Gift Cupboard is excited to celebrate its first anniversary this week.

Wow, have we blossomed in the year !

Our project began as a simple cupboard installed near Town Hall.

We have helped so many locals and visitors through the generosity of businesses, residents and Grant in Aid funding from Town of Osoyoos. It has been a real pleasure to meet some of the folks that expressed interest in our project.

We have had enquiries from Kelowna, Calgary, Winnipeg, Grand Forks, New Bruswick and Texas.

We have also met people from all over the world travelling to our piece of paradise, happily using the gift cupboard. One such couple were John and Victoria, ages 91 and 84 respectively. They have been married for more than 70 some years and they are thrilled to get small items through the gift cupboard throughout the year such as a warm scarf, a pair of mittens and, of all things, laundry detergent.

To see someone so happy with such a small thing.

A young family visiting here from the big city and their little girl ended up with nothing from the Easter Bunny. It just so happened that we had a brand new bunny with her name on it. The father said, “Oh no, we can afford to buy one.”

We offered this to the little girl on behalf of the Easter bunny and the gift cupboard. The parents were blown away by this small gesture of giving. In another cases,  we helped pay the bill for a couple to enjoy a coffee and muffin; toys given to a crying child; a first aid kit to a travelling man; a band aid was given to a girl with a bleeding finger.

The gift cupboard has also provided hats, gloves, blankets and sleeping bags to the homeless in winter as well as giving warm soup on cold nights.

There have beensurprise packages and gifts to families in need, a collection of household goods and clothing for families that lost their homes to fire, helping fire evacuees and helping seasonal workers with cases of shampoo and body cream.

There has also been fundraising for supplies, diapers and school supplies provided for the local children and so many more things we have done to help others on a daily basis.

There have been so many moments where this little gift cupboard has been everything we dreamed it could be and more.

To everyone, every group, every business that joined us, to the media that supported us and to the good folks of this town, we could not have done this without you and your kind and generous support.

A special first anniversary celebration will take place on Sunday, Oct. 15 beginning at 1 p.m. and everyone bringing a donation will be entered into a contest to win one of three gift certificates to be drawn at 2:30 p.m.

Thank you to everyone for the tremendous support over the past year.
