A retired Canadian military expert in electronic warfare says radiation emitted from wireless devices – including “smart meters” FortisBC is trying to bring to customers in the South Okanagan  – represent the single biggest threat to human health in the 21st century.
Speaking before an overflow crowd of more than 120 people packed into Medici’s Gelateria in Oliver last Wednesday evening, retired Canadian Armed Forces captain Jerry Flynn, who lives in Kelowna, presented a thorough, bleak and compelling synopsis of medical and scientific data accumulated during years of research he has conducted on electro-magnetic radiation (EMR).
“The more you learn about this stuff, the angrier you will get,” said Flynn, who worked for much of his career in an elite branch of the Canadian army that was responsible for conducting research on electronic warfare. “When it comes to this stuff, your government is letting you down.”
FortisBC has applied to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) for an application to bring smart meters to thousands of customers across the South Okanagan.
FortisBC management will be hosting an information session on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Spirit Ridge Spa and Resort in Osoyoos.
Some of the most respected scientists in the world have finally gone public in the past few years detailing the enormous negative impact of wireless devices, said Flynn.
Despite the massive amounts of scientific studies on negative health impacts caused by smart meters and other wireless devices, government leaders remain tight-lipped about EMR as powerful business and industry leaders have exerted their influence and allowed the telecommunications industry to thrive, said Flynn.
“Major industry is in bed with the government,” he said.
Flynn was the special guest of Judy Nicholas, an Oliver woman who has formed the Smart Meter Awareness Group, which is working to protest plans by FortisBC to force customers in the South Okanagan to have automated metering infrastructure – more commonly called smart meters – installed on their homes.
Flynn’s presentation was entitled “Smart Meters and Electro-magnetic Radiation: The Worst Health Crisis in Canadian History.”
After a 26-year career in the Canadian military, Flynn said “I know a lot about radiation and electronics,” but added all the information he has gathered through the years is readily available to any consumer who owns a laptop and has access to the Internet.
The biggest problem with smart meters is they emit a constant, pulsing EMR signal that, through the passage of time, can cause serious health problems, said Flynn.
“These utility companies will never tell you these signals are pulsed … there is nothing more harmful than a pulsing EMR signals because they never turn off and that’s what we’re getting with these things,” he said.
Utility companies trying to bring smart meters to this province continually repeat that consumers face much more dangerous exposure on a daily basis from other wireless devices, but refuse to admit these meters are dangerous, which is not true, said Flynn.
“They will try and convince you chronic, low-level exposure isn’t harmful … I honestly don’t think they know,” he said.
No government in the world has ever commissioned a detailed study on smart meters or many other wireless devices, which is frightening considering the growing scientific evidence of how much harm is being caused, he said.
“The truth is no one knows what is safe … and they’re ignoring what scientists know,” he said.
The biggest reason governments around the world have ignored this problem is constant and effective lobbying by major industry as wireless technology has become the most lucrative segment of worldwide economic development, he said.
“Government and industry are in this together to preserve industry profits,” he said. “Governments have ignored it because of immense pressure from industry … it’s all about profit. The most powerful industry in the world today is the telecom industry. We’re talking trillions of dollars.”
When the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States declared in a draft report in 1990 that certain wireless devices could be a “possible carcinogen”, the agency’s funding in this area was decreased from $875,000 per year to $25,000, he said.
Legislation has also been allowed in Canada and the United States, which basically allows wireless communication companies to install towers anywhere they like, which is disturbing because these towers emit constant and dangerous levels of EMR, he said.
There isn’t any policy in this country which controls how much EMR can be emitted from these towers, he said.
“The growth in serious illness and disease and the proliferation of all wireless devices are almost in lock step … they follow the exact same curve over the past 15 years,” he said.
Devices like microwave ovens, cordless phones, WiFi routers and even baby monitors emit EMR for hundreds of feet and these waves pass through walls and enter the human body, he said.
Many of the world’s leading scientists believe the rapid increase in various forms of cancer and other serious illness is directly related to the growth and proliferation of wireless technology over the past 30 years, said Flynn.
Major media outlets have also been complicit in their failure to recognize the seriousness of this issue as not one negative article about concerns over EMR has appeared in the biggest newspapers in Los Angeles, New York or Washington in the past five years, said Flynn.
“These newspapers have been told that if you write a bad story about us, we will not advertise,” he said.
Utility companies have suggested exposure to smart meters remain harmless, but science has proven otherwise and he has taken it upon himself to share the best information he has at his disposal, said Flynn.
In early October, the Supreme Court of Italy ruled in favour of a man who had been awarded a large sum of money at trial after claiming his health had deteriorated due to constant exposure to wireless devices, said Flynn.
He believes the Italian ruling will set a precedent for other legal action by citizens in other countries.
In conclusion, Flynn told the audience the only way applications like the one now before the BCUC by FortisBC will be rejected is if regular citizens voice their opposition and do it loudly and convincingly.
FortisBC’s application to bring smart meters to this region was rejected in 2008 and Flynn said it will happen again if enough people speak out.
“How can a government allow you to put a possible cancer causing piece of equipment on your house?” he asked. “It’s beyond me, but we have to speak up and make sure we’re heard.”

I wish he would have stated whether he himself owns a cell phone or TV or cordless phone or any other electrical device like computers or has a house with electrical wiring in it. All these give off electro-magnetic waves. If he does own any of these I would like to hear why he does?

The article merely paraphrases the misinformation that the speaker is trying to spread. There were no “Compelling” arguments. If Mr. Flynn really has evidence he should share it with the scientific community, win a Nobel Prize and save us all. Implying that there is a conspiracy to hide the truth weakens his arguments and puts his motives into question.

Jerry needs to take his tinfoil hat off.

It’s disgraceful he is using his past, quite admirable, military career to try and lend credibility to his conspiracy theories.

He’s been heavy on rhetoric and anecdotal evidence while being light on factual, scientific data in his crusade along side the anti-smart-meter lobby.

Do a quick google on him and you’ll find he also suggests that the military is using radio waves for mind control of the population….this guy is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

And lastly, he likes to tout his military career as bestowing defacto expert status on him in the areas of radio technology….but when did this fellow retire? Just speculation, but judging by his picture he’s well in to his 70’s and likely left the service decades ago prior to most of the current technologies even being invented.

As Mr. Flynn has said, we should all be very concerned about the proliferation of wireless devices in the last two decades that emit pulsed microwave radiation and the deterioration of health for many that include chronic exhaustion, depression, infertility, un-explained cardiac irregularities, neurological disorders, cancer and more. The manufacturers of RF/MWR technology have never proven their products are safe, only that the energy levels emitted will not cause the skin to heat up- nothing more. The Government is in extreme denial to think humans and all living organisms, big and small, can be taken to the brink of heating with no harmful effects produced. We are very complex chemical/electric beings that were never built to live in a bubble of man made, pulsed, modulated, microwave radiation. We evolved very slowly to live in a world of static, not pulsed, very low level electromagnetic fields in the Hz range (1000 cycles per second), not GHz (1,000,000, 000 cycles per second), to allow for biological homestasis and such things as navigation for the birds and the bees. There is nothing in nature that oscillates at a billion cycles per second! Our body registers this radiation as foreign as it cannot identify it, and therefore keeps itself in a heightened state of stress, with many health consequences as a result if exposure is prolonged. There are many studies from the 1960s and 70s from NASA, US Navy, Surgeon General, Canada, WHO, USSR and more, all identifying serious biological and health effects from microwave levels that we are all commonly exposed to today, including the unborn!

To view many dozens of military studies that has been scanned digitally for the public go to: http://www.magdahavas.com/category/from-zorys-archive/

See for yourself if the wireless industry and the government really have your best interests at heart. The answer to many people’s ill health and how to restore it could be found with a little time and effort on this vitally important issue that impacts us all whether we are aware or not.

Wireless devices are already making me ill. I get terrible headaches around mobiles and also nausea and insomnia plus stabbing pains around wi-fi. Bill doesn’t seem to understand that the microwaves emitted by some electrical devices are stronger than others. For instance computers give off weaker electomagnetic radiation than mobile phones but some say smart meters may be giving off stroner electromagnetic radiation than phones. THere is no safe limit of microwave exposure for children or pregnant women.

Why on earth would the Osoyoos Times give this guy a platform to spew his paranoid, delusional nonsense? Did the editor not do a background check before devoting an entire page of print, to this conspiracy propagandist?

Maybe…JUST MAYBE he’s not lying…have you even CONSIDERED that? You my dear, are part of the problem. If you want to blindly be a SHEEPLE, and believe the fabricated bull that you’ve been fed, hey that’s your business. As For the rest of the world, we’d all like you to shut your PIE HOLE so we can hear the truth.

Reflect on Galileo Galilei, the earth may also be flat so be carefully don’t fall over the edge down in the hole of ignorance and irrational beliefs.

I recommend reasonable thinking people to read information from the BC Cancer Society:

Government agencies don’t read (or heed) unbiased reports by non-industry-funded scientists; anyone who dares blow the whistle and tell the truth gets fired or has his/her funding cut. Just look what’s happening to Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans, and any environmental departments: massive funding cuts to allow the effects of oil spills to be forcibly ignored because there will be no scientists to measure them. Does anyone really believe that Health Canada, Cdn. or BC Cancer Society (gov’t funded), US EPA, etc. don’t fall under the same restrictions? Please, stop being naive. Even WHO’s IARC consisted of about half industry-funded representatives and half un-funded, un-biased scientists who fought like mad to get a Class 2B (possible human carcinogen) rating for microwave radiation. If it had been truly unbiased, they’d have rated it Class 1–human carcinogen) and would have mentioned eg. DNA damage, sterility, mutations, etc. Do your research on the researchers!!

Why is everyone trashing this guy? He is trying to help us and our children from getting cancer? Why is that such a bad thing? Even if there is a 10% chance they could cause cancer and KILL the ones we love the most shouldn’t we heed his warning?

There are lots of sound scientific studies which clearly show the dangers of wireless radiation.

Interesting how quickly others attempt to discredit Mr. Flynn. Anyone even slightly interested in this topic need only do a literature search to see how compelling the factual information is on the health effects of wireless devices and the radiation they produce. At some point the issue will be resolved with electronic devices that have adequate warnings and safeguards for the users. But until then be very wary and don’t let those who are so quick to discount the evidence out there influence you.

    I recommend reasonable THINKING people
    READ before offering baseless opinion.

NOT the health agencies who have been negligent – and have a legal ‘exposure’ – such as government-industry. Rather, the scientific summaries found in Microwavenews.com
    or http://www.powerwatch.org.uk

OR go DIRECT to the scientific literature,
    like Jerry Flynn.

Actually Fred the factual information available doesn’t support your position, it refutes it. There is a great deal of info from a wide range of sources here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_radiation_and_health

And Christal, you are suffering from the same misinformation as many in interpreting what a Class 2B Carcinogen is: This “possibly carcinogenic” classification means only that “there is very little scientific evidence as to carcinogenicity”

It is always interesting to study attitude in a society that cannot be argued in reasoned terms such as the cem-trails conspiracy the opposition against the HST and the smart-meters. Fortunately, mostly the society that makes up democratically represented economies such as Canada is educated enough to sort fiction out and support reality. However, the history is also full of democratic failure and should never be underestimated i.e. where the voter supports belief causing harm and irreparable harm to society, rather than science and reality. It is situations in a democracy where the press is vital the society in Osoyoos should have a problem with describing the argument against smart-meters as compelling! What about decades old issues allowed to unsolved escalate in to adversity?

Research in the field of Smart meters has been performed
globally and the man is right. They are dangerous. And before any more comment is given, may be you all should
do some research yourself and than judge the speaker..
Anything related to the smart meters is readily available if you only look for it. http://www.citizensforsafetechnology.com will help you along
so please for the good of us all take the time and then judge.
Credit goes to the speaker, he has taken the time to inform you. So make use of it.

It takes time to cook a turkey so to you that don’t believe EMF can case tumors and cancer,KEEP USING YOUR CELL PHONE and report back in about 10 years.Oh ,and also make sure you live near a tower and you have WiFi installed in your home.

I’m a Ham radio operator, and though I can’t say that these Smart Meters will cause cancer, or other problems, I can testify first hand that 12 years ago when “cordless phones” were analog, and operated in the 900 Mhz radio frequency band, the “handset” could be received easily from 9 or 10 “kilometers away” without a problem with someone with a half decent antenna. Today they operate in the 2000 Mhz range and are digital to “assist” in privacy. Your microwave oven operates about 1000 Mhz, and cooks things with moisture in it, (like your brain), just fine. Granted at a much higher power level.
The thing to keep in mind when considering these “modern time saving devices” is, they have to have enough power to penetrate walls, and over come other sources of interference such as microwave ovens, computers, house wiring, dimmer switches, and other items about today’s households that most of us don’t even consider as emitting anything. Simply because you can not receive it, or feel it.
But lets say that radio device did not operate in the radio frequency band, but with ultraviolet light. In short order the skin exposed to that frequency of light would have a rather substantial reaction to it visibly, in either a tanning, sunburning, or with long exposures, skin cancer in some individuals.
Sound waves can not be heard by most of us below 200 Hz. However exposure to intense sound in the 15 to 20 Hz range can kill by interfering with your brain waves that operate in that range controlling your heart and other organs. Its effect is bad enough that it is “supposed” to be outlawed in warfare as a inhumane method of killing in the 1920’s, when its affects were discovered.
Then there of course is radioactivity. Unless you are exposed to a lethal dose in a very short time, such as 2 or 3 seconds, you have no sensation of the radioactivity acting upon you. And most of us know that no radioactivity is good for you.
On the other hand you need certain frequencies of light to live, see by, and make Vitamin D.
HOWEVER, also keep in mind that the broad use of high intensity radio waves from radio stations, radar systems, microwave ovens, etc., etc., are a “new” exposure to the human body in the last 120 years, and especially in the last 40 years. The human body has not developed over eon’s of time with this amount of radio frequency exposure, because there wasn’t any of this intensity before. These are man made events, not natural.
For example take the cell phone. Here you have a very reliable device able to be used indoors, and yet it can reach a cell tower 8 kilometers away, reliably. Now how big a bell would you need to be heard at that distance from inside your house ? Now picture your head inside the bell as it is rung, (your cell phone up to your ear). That is the energy being radiated by your cell, and yet you are not aware of it because “you don’t sense those cell phone radio frequencies”. So they aren’t there to you. But in reality they are there. just like you are.
Some frequencies maybe good for you, even enjoyable, like music, or sunlight. Some may have long term exposure detrimental effects. Others may kill you outright.
The thing is,…..don’t be stupid and blow off something as being a non existent hazard simply because it doesn’t hurt, or people aren’t dropping like flies. Rest assured, there is an affect. It just depends on your generic makeup of how much, and over how long you can absorb it without it showing an effect.

just for the record for this blog … I got radiated by the phone company numerous many times in the early 80`s. not only by 4 GHZ microwave radiation from dishes and their waveguide but also from high wattage yagi and auto-tel antenna`s. i was inside a working 12ft dish for at least 20 minutes. was told the system was turned off and I was just doing what my incharge was telling me to do, as a brand new employee. I was lied to. did live waveguide hot cuts with no protection because the phone company couldn`t provide radiation suits back then. it was all about the $$$ cost and the outage down time for the phone company. the phone company treating their employees as if they were machines. during those seven years on that job I spent many hours side by side high wattage yagi`s and other dangerous antenna`s. the abuse started when I was 20 years old and lasted for exactly seven years to the day until I got off the antenna crew while working for B.C. Tel. then they tried to cover it up. that’s now 26 years to 33 years ago. I have since fathered a superstar son and a superstar daughter. i`m now 53 years old and have no health problems except I can`t sleep worth shit ever since that Hixon Radio incident of nov. 18th 1980. I’ve been haunted ever since. fibre optics is good. radiation is not good. humans with power are not good.

Kevin, just because you were exposed and did not end up being very sick yet doesn’t mean other people would not be harmed by microwave. You are still relatively young at 53 years old. I hope you will stay healthy, but there is still some decades ahead of you. Not everybody who smokes cigarettes end up having lung cancer, either. Just because a possible carcinogenic substance doesn’t cause the same diseases to everybody does not mean it is legitimate to force it onto everyone.
