DEADLINE TO FINALIZE DESERT PARK LEASE EXTENDED TO SEPTEMBER

Working out a contract for the operation of Osoyoos’s Desert Park has been a bigger process than originally anticipated, said Osoyoos Mayor Stu Wells, and that means that contract may now not be ready until the fall. “There are bigger deficiencies than either party had anticipated,” Wells said, referring to the contract that is in the works between the Town and South Interior Recreational Equine Centre (SIREC) for the running of the recreational facility. PROVINCE EVICTS CAMPERS FROM ‘FRENCH HILL’

The B.C. Forests and Range Ministry has evicted as many as 160 people living on Crown land in the Strawberry Creek area behind the Buena Vista Industrial Park due to violations of the provincial Land Act and the Wildfire Act. On June 22, the ministry’s Compliance and Enforcement Division received a public complaint regarding people camping in the area that has come to be known as “French Hill.” [...more]

STRATA CORPORATION AGREES TO SETTLE DISCRIMINATION MATTER WITHOUT JUDICIAL REVIEW

Members of the Casitas Del Sol strata corporation have voted to mediate a settlement with a resident of the manufactured-home community on 115th street who lives with a disability. Maureen Poucher, who became the corporation’s president in June of last year, said 54 members of the corporation attended a meeting on May 29 and agreed to settle a discrimination issue with Mick Shannon, a retired train engineer in his 60s who suffers from a type of lung disease known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). PROPOSED BYLAW COULD THREATEN PLANS TO INSTALL ELECTRONIC SIGN AT SCHOOL

A year-long project by the Osoyoos Elementary School’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) has been put on hold due to a new sign bylaw in the works by the Town of Osoyoos. “We want to purchase one of those electronic message boards,” explained PAC president Sandy Summers. “(But) at our last PAC meeting it was brought to our attention the Town was creating a bylaw that may prevent us having that sign.” [...more]

CASITAS DEL SOL TO VOTE ON WHETHER TO PROCEED WITH JUDICIAL REVIEW OF DISCRIMINATION DECISION

Residents of the Casitas Del Sol manufactured home community on 115th Street will vote later this month on whether to proceed with a judicial review of a B.C. Human Rights Tribunal decision that found the community’s strata council guilty of discriminating against a physically disabled resident. In December, the tribunal issued a decision stating the council discriminated against Mick Shannon, a retired train engineer in his 60s who suffers from a type of lung disease known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), by not allowing him to keep a solar screen installed on one of his home’s windows. RETAINING WALL OWNER ASKS TOWN FOR STAY ON ORDER TO REMOVE STRUCTURE

A Lobelia Drive resident who was ordered last May to remove a retaining wall on his property is asking the Town for more time to find a way to take down or alter the structure. In a May 28, 2009, decision, a judge granted the Town of Osoyoos an injunction against Ken Nelmes to remove a five-and-half-metre-high wall on his property bordering Jasmine Drive. [...more]

The Town of Osoyoos is ready to take more control of what is happening on Osoyoos Lake – and on March 15, the public will have an opportunity to give its opinion of a proposed water zone bylaw at a public hearing. Osoyoos town council gave first reading to the bylaw on March 1. “Water zoning will give the town the ability to be proactive in the management of moorage activities on Osoyoos Lake through enforcement, when required,” states a staff report by Steve Shannon, an assistant planner with the Town.
