With excellent weather for most of its three days, the Lake Osoyoos Sailing Club’s annual regatta is being called a success this year.

The winds co-operated throughout Friday and Saturday. Only on Sunday morning did they let up, forcing organizers to end the event around noon.

Sailing races all took place in the north basin of Osoyoos Lake.

Participants were happier with the winds this year after the two previous years when winds didn’t co-operate.

There were 36 sailors ranging in age from eight to 88, said Donna Storwick, who chaired the event with John Cowan.

“It was a hugely successful event,” said Storwick, praising the participants, volunteers and sponsors.

The event was also the National Sea Spray Championship.

Once again Don Snell, from Brooks, Alta., took the top spot among the 11 Sea Sprays.

The other noteworthy winner was Ian Johnston, from Kelowna, who took the Edward Jones award for best overall results, said Storwick.

Other awards were given for top scores with the various classes of Lasers – full rig, 4.7 and Laser Radial.

None of the winners were from Osoyoos.

As well, all the youngsters who sailed the 12 Optis received awards for participating. The Opti (Optimist) is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children.

The event brought children from two Kelowna-based race teams, one from the Kelowna Yacht Club and the other from the Central Okanagan Sailing Association, Storwick said.

There were also about nine local sailors, all adults, she said.

The event drew a number of spectators including parents, most of whom watched from the Lake Osoyoos Sailing Club.
